Nine colorful and endangered tree-dwelling tarantulas discovered in Brazil

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Arboreal tarantulas are known from a few tropical places in Asia, Africa, South and Central America and the Caribbean. These tarantulas generally have a lighter build, thinner bodies and longer legs, better suited for their habitat. They have increased surface area at the ends of their legs, allowing them to better climb different surfaces, while their light build makes them more agile.

Their core area is the Amazon, from where most of the species are known and normally very common, living in the jungle or even in house's surroundings. Now, nine new species were described from Central and Eastern Brazil, including four of the smallest arboreal species ever recorded.

The study was performed by Dr Rog?rio Bertani, who is a tarantula specialist and a researcher at the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His results have been published in the open access journal ZooKeys.

"Instead of the seven species formerly known in the region, we now have sixteen," said Dr Bertani. "In a resurrected genus with a mysterious single species known from 1841, we have now five species." "These are the smallest arboreal tarantulas in the world, and their analysis suggests the genus to be very old, so they can be considered relicts of a formerly more widely distributed taxon."

Other discoveries include new species of tarantulas living inside bromeliads. "Only a single species had been known to live exclusively inside these plants, and now we have another that specialized in bromeliads as well." A further species was found at the top of table mountains where trees are rare. "This species also inhabits bromeliads, one of the few places for an arboreal tarantula to live that offer water and a retreat against the intense sunlight" he says.

The discovery of all these new species outside the Amazon was unexpected and illustrates how little we know of the fauna surrounding us, even from hot spots of threatened biodiversity like the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado (a kind of savannah vegetation). These species are highly endemic and the regions where they live are suffering high pressure from human activities. Therefore, studies for their conservation are necessaries. Furthermore, all these new species are colorful, which could attract the interest for capturing them for the pet trade, constituting another threat.

beach cottage surfer boy stew chorizo recipe

G?day Beach Cottage girls!

Do you love yourself a little Too Easy fix it and forget it meal that you can sling in your slow cooker / crockpt, or shove on the stove top and do nothing else to?? Perhaps you have a hungry surfer boy or six in the house that you need to feed?

Well let me tell you, if there is one thing I can write about on this here blog, it?s throwing things in your slow cooker and coming out the other side looking very very good.

?

beach cottage recipe easy stew

This recipe has been with us for ages now ? it came about though through being faced with leftovers from a roast, a sad and lonely sausage, a few past their best carrots fading fast and more cans of pulses that one woman in an old cottage somewhere in a cottage Down Under could ever want or indeed, need.

I decided that the only thing for it was a dump & go in the old crock pot and hope for the best.

beach cottage blog recipes

I have spent a lot of time learning this craft of slow cooking?from the early days when I pulled out that little lonesome crock pot from the back of the cupboard when Beach Cottage Baby number 3 was a few months old and we could not face another plate of pasta and found many a recipe calling for a can of mushroom soup, to nowadays where I have up my sleeve a plethora of things that I have dabbled and fiddled with until I have got it right.

easy simple crock pot slow cooker recipe

I was, recently, on a cookery book reading marathon, there may or may not have been a bathtub and white subway wall tile involved.? While reading I was aghast to read one of the writers abhorring the use of one of these gadgets in his kitchen.? Dude?? Hello?!

Clearly, clearly, clearly, he had never sat on a tiled kitchen floor in the middle of an English village, about the month of August with a huge 10lb third baby and a husband out for 14 hours a day in floods of head-banging tears.? Clearly not.

But I dear Beach Cottage girls have and it is with this insight that I present you with another Too Easy Surfer Boy recipe.

beach cottage recipe collage

Make this for the males in your house, or indeed when the girls want to snuggle up on the sofa with comfort food and watch Meryl Streep movies and all will be so very good in the world.

?

?

2 x cans chickpeas

1 x can tomatoes

2 cups cooked chicken

2 x tbsp balsamic vinegar

1 to 2 cups chicken stock/broth

1 x large chorizo sausage

2 medium onions

2 carrots

handful fresh garden herbs

3 cloves garlic

salt & pepper

cheese

bread

(serves 4-6)

1. add all to your crock pot / slow cooker

2. cook on high 4 ? 5 hours

3. serve topped with cheese & crusty bread

**Beach Cottage Recipe Notes

*adjust the chicken stock to your needs (ie how much time it will be cooking for) and your slow cooker hence why I have put 1-2 cups ? my new slow cooker cooks hotter than my old one and I find I am adding more liquid, best always to start with less then you can add more, but if it looks too liquidy (pls no grammar/spelling emails) just move the lid ajar and let some evaporate off?? *any vinegar will do but balsamic is good *you might want to lose a clove of garlic? *I often, especially if I feel like annoying my kiddos, add a teaspoon of dried chilli? *any old veggie sitting in the bottom of the fridge can go in here? * on the stove top / hob this works after an hour or so, which plausibly means that it can be hurried together when you get in, left while you do all the Arsenic Hour stuff and come back to it ready to go, but really a couple of hours is best *by large chorizo sausage I mean one that is about 6 inches long, let?s not get rude here *garden herbs to me mean anything that is thriving under the Aussie sun, here I threw in Oregano, Italian parsley, Thyme and a sniffle of Basil? *I mostly make this on Tuesdays with the leftovers and the bones from Sunday?s roast chicken, I throw the bones in a pot for the stock and use the chicken for the stew

There is not fancy schmancy here, the recipes I throw in my crock in the middle of the day when all in the world is good, will not, I don?t believe, win me any awards, indeed will not catapult me to the dizzy heights of tv reality fame on Masterchef or the like.

easy stew recipe

But, they will do many a thing.

They will mean my family think I am an awesome cook, which I am by far not, they will also think I slave over them, which I so do not (which in turn allows me some pretty good cards to present when needing to blackmail anyone for anything) and more importantly, in one big old fell swoop the recipes I pop in that little beauty, time and again, week in, week out, mean that all is done when we walk in the door from sport and that there is no clear up save throwing one big ole pot from one side of the kitchen counter to the dishwasher on the other.

Does a double whammy like that float my little Beach Cottage boat?

Oh yes, I do think so.

See you soon lovelies, I am back from a long walk by the sea with Barls, it?s pretty warm here today, there was talk of a swim too?

Magnitude 7.7 quake strikes off Canadian coast

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated, but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful temblor hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center lifted its tsunami advisory for Hawaii Sunday morning just before 4 a.m. local time, three hours after downgrading from a warning and less than six hours after the waves first hit the islands.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service canceled tsunami advisories for Canada, Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California.

Tsunami Warning Center officials said wave heights were diminishing in Hawaii, though swimmers and boaters should be careful of strong or unusual currents. The biggest waves ? about 5 feet (1.5 meters)high ? appeared to hit Maui.

There were no immediate reports of damage, though one person died in a fatal crash near a road that was closed because of the threat near Oahu's north shore.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said the state was lucky to avoid more severe surges.

"We're very, very grateful that we can go home tonight counting our blessings," Abercrombie said.

Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.

Canada's largest earthquake since 1700 was an 8.1 magnitude quake on August 22, 1949 off the coast of British Columbia, according to the Canadian government's Natural Resources website. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault in what the department called Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault ? the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii.

In 1970 a 7.4 magnitude quake struck south of the Haida Gwaii.

The USGS said the temblor shook the waters around British Columbia and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock after several minutes. Several other aftershocks were reported.

The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it lasted about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.

"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."

Lenore Lawrence, a resident of Queen Charlotte City on the Haida Gwaii, said the quake was "definitely scary," adding she wondered if "this could be the big one." She said the shaking lasted more than a minute. While several things fell off her mantle and broke, she said damage in her home was minimal.

Many on the B.C. mainland said the same.

"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."

Residents rushed out of their homes in Tofino, British Columbia on Vancouver Island when the tsunami sirens sounded, but they were allowed to return about two hours after the quake.

In Hawaii, the tsunami warning spurred residents to stock up on essentials at gas stations and grocery stores and sent tourists in beachside hotels to higher floors in their buildings. Bus service into Waikiki was cut off an hour before the first waves, and police in downtown Honolulu shut down a Halloween block party. In Kauai, three schools used as evacuation centers quickly filled to capacity.

In Alaska, the wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches (10 centimeters), much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The first wave hit Craig about two hours after the earthquake.

(AP) ? The scale of the child sex abuse scandal engulfing the BBC expanded on Thursday as authorities announced that 300 potential victims had come forward with accusations against one of the broadcaster's most popular children's entertainers and that others might have acted with him.

The scandal swirling around one of Britain's most respected news organizations also prompted a spirited defense from New York Times chairman and publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. of the paper's incoming CEO, the former top executive of the BBC.

In a letter to staff, Sulzberger said he was satisfied that Mark Thompson, who was the BBC's director general until last month, had no role in the decision to scrap an investigative segment about the abuse allegations against the late Jimmy Savile.

The well-known children's TV and radio host is accused of using his fame to coerce teens into having sex with him in his car, his camper and even in dressing rooms on BBC premises.

Police Commander Peter Spindler, head of the Scotland Yard inquiry into the scandal, said Thursday that 300 potential victims had come forward so far and even more were expected to contact authorities. He said all but two of the cases involved girls and that detectives had interviewed 130 people.

The police commander acknowledged he had been stunned by the volume of abuse allegations reported to his team of 30 officers in the three weeks since accusations about Savile's activities first came to public attention.

"It is quite staggering, the number of women ... and this is primarily women; we have only got two men in the system so far," Spindler said.

Spindler said Savile, who died last October at age 84, was "undoubtedly" one of the worst sex offenders in recent British history.

Since the allegations aired on British television this month, London police have received three times the usual number of calls about allegations of past sexual abuse. "I have no doubt that we are in a watershed moment for child abuse investigations," Spindler said.

Previously feted for his charity work at hospitals and homes for children, Savile is alleged to have deliberately supported such causes to target troubled youths whose credibility would be questioned if they reported the alleged sexual abuse.

Spindler said that although the majority of cases related to Savile alone, some involved the entertainer and other, unidentified suspects. In addition, some potential victims who reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against unidentified men that did not involve the BBC host.

He confirmed that police could seek to prosecute any suspects who are still living but said no one has been arrested or questioned so far.

Spindler also revealed that a retired London police officer had contacted Scotland Yard to report that he investigated Savile in the 1980s after a young woman accused him of assaulting her inside his trailer while it was parked on BBC premises. The ex-officer said there hadn't been sufficient evidence to prosecute Savile at the time, Spindler said.

Police have also discovered that a woman contacted Scotland Yard in 2003 to allege that Savile had touched her inappropriately in the 1970s but did not seek to press charges. In addition, authorities acknowledged that Savile was questioned in 2007 over an allegation tied to a school in Surrey but prosecutors declined to bring charges.

The Savile scandal has rocked the BBC and prompted disbelief that the TV host's crimes could have gone unnoticed or unreported by colleagues or managers.

Thompson, the incoming New York Times CEO, who was BBC director-general from 2004 until last month, is among those facing questions from lawmakers. Thompson has insisted he never met Savile, was unaware of rumors about his behavior and had little knowledge of the expose that was canceled late last year just as other BBC divisions were planning tributes to the late entertainer.

In his letter to Times staff, Sulzberger said Thompson had thoroughly explained his handling of the issue.

"Mark has provided a detailed account of that matter, and I am satisfied that he played no role in the cancellation of the segment," Sulzberger wrote.

"Our opinion was then and remains now that he possesses high ethical standards and is the ideal person to lead our company," the letter said.

For almost 20 years, Savile made children's dreams come true on a popular TV show, "Jim'll Fix It." He was also the original host of the music program "Top of the Pops," which ran from 1964 to 2006, featuring performances by everyone from The Rolling Stones to the Sex Pistols.

Savile championed a host of good causes, frequently running marathons to raise money. He helped to collect millions for the creation of a national spinal injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in southern England and bequeathed money for a heart unit at Leeds infirmary called the Savile Institute.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to charity and entertainment and received a papal knighthood from the Vatican. Prince Charles was among those who paid tribute when Savile died last year.

Analysis: Catch-up time as BP eyes closure on Russia, spill

LONDON (Reuters) - International oil company BP , weakened and distracted by its troubles in the United States and Russia, is in danger of losing touch with the leaders in an industry where strength and focus yield the richest pickings.

"I can't help thinking they've sort of lost their way. "Everywhere you look, they're falling behind," said a senior executive of one rival this week.

He spoke after BP agreed to swap its Russian assets, a quarter of its worldwide oil output, for $12.4 billion in cash plus 20 percent of the buyer, Russian state oil company Rosneft .

The $27 billion deal would end a fraught relationship with the Soviet-born tycoons who co-own TNK-BP with BP.

It may or may not solve BP's problems in Russia and could yet unravel, but the company had little choice than to throw its hand in with the government of President Vladimir Putin. Russia, like other resource-rich nations, is anxious to see as much of its oil money as possible staying at home, and is reversing the sell-offs of the 1990s.

"Jury out, as ever, but in fairness to BP, this is a better outcome than many could have hoped for," said Deutsche Bank analyst Lucas Herman in a note reiterating his "buy" recommendation for its shares.

BP is as old as the modern oil industry itself, and has been in far worse scrapes before.

A hundred years ago it had run out of money developing oil reserves in Persia (now Iran), and with no customers for its fuel, faced oblivion. "What a hell of a mess," wrote John Cargill, the chairman of its top shareholder at the time.

But within a few years the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, as it was then called, had dodged bankruptcy and was back on its feet thanks to wartime fuel demand from the British Navy.

In 2012, chief executive Bob Dudley should not need that kind of luck.

He runs a profitable company with leading oil and gas positions in U.S. Gulf deepwater, Trinidad and Angola. For future growth, he has exploration acreage in the South Atlantic margins taking in Uruguay, Brazil and Namibia.

It's not a hell of a mess, but he might hope better times are ahead, just as they were a century ago.

BP has slipped to distant fourth out of five western oil supermajors by stock market value, having ruled the European roost as world number two behind Exxon Mobil in its early 21st-Century heyday.

The company also lags its peers by investment valuation measures, as the table below shows. Earnings quality, calculated by Thomson Reuters Starmine, measures the degree to which past earnings are likely to be maintained on a scale of 1 to 100.

SHADOW OF THE SPILL

The core reasons for a BP stock market value 'discount', which analysts put in the tens of billions of dollars, are the Russian uncertainties and the looming shadow of potential liabilities for the 2010 U.S. Gulf oil spill.

After months of growing expectations that U.S. authorities were moving towards a settlement, in August the Department of Justice made a court filing re-asserting its case for gross negligence with regard to the accident.

Such a finding could cost BP $21 billion under the United States' Clean Water Act, based on a maximum fine of $4,300 per barrel spilled tied to a 4.9 million-barrel estimate of the total that spewed into the sea.

BP has already spent $14 billion on clean-up operations and paid out over $8 billion in claims. It is offering a further $7.8 billion in settlement to individuals and businesses affected by the disaster on top of all the other costs.

It plans to contest a gross negligence charge at a hearing due to start in January. A fairness hearing on the proposed $7.8 billion settlement for individuals and businesses is due on November 8.

BP has made good progress selling a raft of assets so that it can shoulder a big hit, having raised to date some $35 billion towards a goal of $38 billion from divestments.

In the process, it has expunged another blot on its U.S. safety reputation - the accident-prone Texas City refinery, selling it to Marathon Petroleum earlier in October.

So financially, BP has the makings of a new start, in the United States, Russia and elsewhere.

"Our strategy targets higher cashflow; we expect to increase operating cashflow by 50 percent from 2011 to 2014 (in a $100 oil price environment)," BP said in an emailed statement.

But it is not all about money. The spill and the Russian issues have taken management time that might have been focused on the business itself. And the spill has tarnished BP's reputation in a core producing country.

TO-DO LIST

On Dudley's to-do list now are production problems in Azerbaijan, where the company is trying to mollify a government angry about falling output.

Last week he juggled face time with Rosneft boss Igor Sechin and Rovnag Adbullayev, the president of the Azerbaijan state oil company SOCAR.

Then there is Rumaila in southern Iraq, the biggest of the country's producing oilfields. BP has the pick of the bunch of service contracts, but it no longer looks like the most alluring business in post-war Iraq.

Rivals who followed it in are having second thoughts, heading north to the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan for richer pickings and some ownership of the production itself, to the fury of the Baghdad government.

On a smaller scale, BP's one-year-old Indian projects are in the doldrums. Partner Reliance Industries is considering shutting underperforming gas fields.

BP also has issues in Norway, where its Skarv project is months behind schedule.

These troubles are the normal stuff of the international oil business, of course. And BP is not alone in suffering from increasing competition for assets from cash-rich national oil companies and for industry project "action" from the increasingly influential oil services sector.

NO EASY RIDE

And BP's rivals have their own crosses to bear; witness Shell's embarrassing stutter in the Arctic as winter closes in, with $5 billion spent and barely a hole drilled, and Exxon's expensive 2010 acquisition of shale gas producer XTO Energy just before gas prices hit the skids. All the big guns of the industry are struggling for a toe-hold in some of the newest and hottest provinces of east Africa and offshore Brazil.

But BP lacks Exxon's scale, and without TNK-BP, which used to pay out rich dividends, it could do with a cash cow like Shell's GTL plant in Qatar to feed its exploration and acquisition budget.

On a longer term strategic level, BP is seen as slipping behind in the race to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.

LNG projects - expensive, complex and risky, like the U.S. Arctic offshore where BP is also conspicuously absent - are among the few areas where the supermajors can still flex their muscles.

Sets of data produced by rivals Royal Dutch/Shell and BG shows BP dropping from third to sixth place by 2017 among the big corporate players in terms of LNG projects onstream or under construction.

The data shows BP with barely an extra million metric tons a year of new output in its portfolio by then, compared with roughly an extra 15 million for Chevron and 7 or 8 million each for BG and Shell, mainly thanks to that trio's huge projects in Australia.

"We've set out our strategy to 2014 - focusing the company around our strengths, the things we do well - and are making good progress on it," said BP in its statement.

"These strengths include exploration, operating in the deep water, developing gas value chains from production to market, and developing and managing giant fields. And looking for valuable barrels rather than simple volumes. Between 2012 and 2014 we expect to bring 15 new major upstream projects on stream that have margins double that of our 2011 portfolio average."

All music to investors' ears, but some of its rivals have a head start, and they won't be standing still.

Are you too busy to be productive? | Dynamic Business ? Small ...

Being terminally busy seems to be an affliction of the modern age. If you aren?t constantly hanging off your phone and checking email, and if you don?t have every segment of your day scheduled, it is easy to feel that you are doing your job well enough, or you are not popular or important enough.?

Do you have days where you find yourself rushing around like a mad thing, yet at the end of it can?t think of one useful thing you have done? This could be a sign that you are too busy and not productive enough.

Believe it or not, there is actually another way.

Rather than rush around from one place to another, you might want to try slowing down and focusing on what you actually need to do. It sounds simple, but in a society where being constantly on the go is almost like a status symbol, doing less can be easier said than done.

Productivity is all about making the best use of your time. If you are feeling stressed out and like everything is getting on top of you, and if you don?t have time for the things or people you enjoy, then it is well worth your while to stop and think about whether everything you are doing is strictly necessary.

When you constantly take on too much, you run the risk of becoming burned out and you end up getting less done. Seem pointless? It probably is.

Being too busy and not productive enough can also cause major problems for your business. Nothing says ?unprofessional? like missed deadlines, unreturned phone calls and turning up late for meetings. By taking on too much, you can end up letting down clients and colleagues and getting a reputation for being flaky or unreliable. Clearing your schedule so that you cut out unnecessary appointments, and focus on what is important, could vastly improve the level of service you provide and help prevent things slipping through the cracks.

Just because you are busy does not mean you are getting a lot accomplished. If you feel like you probably can do more with your time, why not consider cutting out a few obligations? Although it may be tempting to use being busy as an excuse for forgetting to return calls or emails or missing out on that important meeting, doing so runs the risk of making you look less competent than someone with less on.

With increasing emphasis on work/life balance, and taking time out for ourselves, hopefully society is starting to catch up with common sense in terms of how much pressure we put on ourselves and how much we can realistically achieve.

Don?t fall into the trap of thinking that being busy means you are a high achiever! Improve your productivity, rather than just increase your busy-ness level, and you may find you get more done, and you actually have a bit of time for yourself. Now that?s success!

THE DEVIL IN DR M admits:Hudud a TRICK by MCA & Umno to scare the Chinese & Malays

Controversial former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad gave the
game away, admitting that BN parties used 'scare' tactics to divide
their respective communities in order to cling to power.
THE DEVIL IN DR M admits:Hudud a TRICK by MCA & Umno to scare the Chinese & Malays"These are disgusting tactics which no self-respecting leader should ever use or want to be associated with. The fact that Dr M is boasting about the MCA scaring the Chinese to shun the DAP signals 3 possibilities. One, Mahathir is really losing his marbles, second, Umno has given up totally on MCA and is now publicly cutting ties so as to salvage the situation for themselves, or thirdly, BN is now so desperate, it now longer cares what the people think," PKR vice president Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
"BN leaders will ram their stories and spin down the people's throats and this is worrying because it indicates that they have only one card left and that is to rely on cheating at the ballot boxes to secure a win by all ways and means. What they do and what the people think no longer matters - the results of the coming general election will be manipulated one way or another to reflect a BN victory. The people must beware and resist."
Umno and MCA exploiting Islam

The Batu MP was referring to news that Mahathir said he was unfazed by the recent attacks by the MCA against making Malaysia an Islamic state and introducing Islamic criminal law or hudud.
Comments by MCA president Chua Soi Lek, who warned that introducing hudud would dent Malaysia's economy, had been allowed to escape censure by Prime Minister Najib Razak.
This had prompted an onslaught against Najib's Umno party which was accused of being afraid to lock horns with the MCA over the issue and thereby failing to protect the rights of Muslims. Indeed, Najib had maintained a deafening silence, allowing Mahathir to fire or misfire back as the latter saw fit.
"Their purpose is to frighten the Chinese, not the Malays or Muslims... MCA wants to scare the Chinese so they will shun DAP," Malaysiakini reported Dr M as saying.
Are the Malays FOOLS to be led by such hypocrisy and deception
Mahathir dropped another clinker when he 'admitted' that MCA had kept quiet when his administration declared Malaysia an Islamic state - a situation that non-Muslims in the country had objected to.
"In the past, MCA never objected when we declared this country to be an Islamic state and that we will practice Islamic values," said Dr M.
The 87-year-old former Umno president is bound to raise eyebrows with his unguarded remarks that critics said reeked of hypocrisy, bad faith and double standards.
"This confirms Umno doesn't care about the Chinese electorate at all. Dr M is not only condescending and insulting the intelligence of Chinese voters when he blows the whistle on the MCA, he is also testing the patience of the Malay voters," PKR MP for Gopeng Lee Boon Chye told Malaysia Chronicle.
"I wonder if he realizes that or has the Umno elite become so arrogant, they don't mind admitting that their politicking is just a game and not real leadership or good governance. The Malays will be even more upset by Dr M's MCA-hudud comments. No one likes to be treated like an imbecile and fair game for the ruthless politicians.
The Devil himself
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, whose party has borne the brunt of the MCA's anti-hudud politicking, also minced no words. Calling the web of deceit spun by Umno and MCA to trick the Chinese and Malay electorates a "devil's compact", the MP for Ipoh Timur slammed BN leaders for being willing to sacrifice national unity for the sake of their personal political power.
"It is very clear MCA and UMNO leaders have reached a ?devil?s compact? for each side to tell the most blatant lies and falsehoods to frighten Chinese and Malay voters respectively, as they seem to have concluded that such politics of hate and duplicity is the only way to protect and preserve UMNO-BN power in the 13th general election," Kit Siang said in a statement.
"UMNO leaders, especially the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who opened the MCA Annual General Assembly, do not believe the MCA lies and falsehoods, as Chua Soi Lek?s defamation of PAS and Islam for condoning rape of non-Muslims. But they kept quiet, in the same way that MCA leaders are keeping quiet although they do not believe UMNO lies and falsehoods that DAP wants to create a Christian Malaysia, abolish the Malay Rulers and set up a Republic!? This is the Devil?s Compact. No wonder the recent statement by former Prime Minister, Tun D. Mahathir ?? Better the devil you know than the angel you don?t."

(AP) ? Facebook finally has proof that it can make money from mobile advertising.

As part of Tuesday's third-quarter results, the world's biggest social media company disclosed for the first time that some 14 percent of its ad revenue came from mobile advertising. It started showing ads to users who access Facebook from their phones and tablet computers about six months ago.

Since before the company's initial public offering in May, investors had been concerned that Facebook wasn't taking advantage of its growing mobile user base.

"I want to dispel this myth that Facebook can't make money on mobile," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a conference call with analysts. "This may (have seemed) true earlier this year because we hadn't started trying yet."

Tuesday's quarterly financial report ?Facebook's second as a public company? sent its stock sharply higher in after-hours trading. The stock jumped $1.90, or 9.7 percent, to $21.40 after the announcement. Facebook had closed up 18 cents at $19.50 in regular trading on a day that saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average drop 243 points, or 1.8 percent.

Facebook Inc. posted a loss of $59 million, or 2 cents per share, in the July-September period. That's down from earnings of $227 million, or 10 cents per share a year ago, when Facebook was still privately held.

Excluding special items, mainly related stock compensation expenses, Facebook Inc. earned $311 million, or 12 cents per share, in the latest quarter, a penny better than what analysts were expecting.

Revenue rose 32 percent to $1.26 billion from $954 million. That's also higher than the $1.23 billion that analysts polled by FactSet had expected.

Facebook's monthly user base grew 26 percent from a year earlier, to 1.01 billion. Some 60 percent of users access Facebook using a mobile device, the company said.

"People who use our mobile products are more engaged, and we believe we can increase engagement even further as we continue to introduce new products and improve our platform," Zuckerberg said. "At the same time, we are deeply integrating monetization into our product teams in order to build a stronger, more valuable company."

Advertising revenue was $1.09 billion, up 36 percent from a year earlier. It represented about 86 percent of Facebook's total revenue.

Revenue from payments and other fees climbed 13 percent to $176 million. The figure includes Facebook's cut from the virtual items people buy for games they pay on the site. Facebook said that while payments from Zynga Inc. declined, its overall games ecosystem has become more diverse. In recent quarters Facebook has derived as much as 12 percent of its revenue from "FarmVille" maker Zynga Inc., but Zynga has been experiencing a slowdown. Zynga said Tuesday that it is laying off about 5 percent of its workforce of 3,000 people.

Facebook did not provide guidance for the current quarter or beyond, a practice it has maintained since its first earnings report as a public company in late July.

Facebook's stock has been trading at roughly half of its initial public offering price of $38. The May 18 IPO was one of the most highly anticipated offerings in recent years, but the excitement quickly deflated ? in part due to concerns about Facebook's ability to grow mobile ad revenue. The stock has not traded above its IPO price since its first trading day.

WHY IT MATTERS: Energy

The issue:

Americans depend on energy for everything from driving their cars to powering factories, homes and offices ? and of course our smartphones, laptops and tablets. How that energy is produced and where it comes from affect jobs, the economy and the environment.

___

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama proposes an "all of the above" strategy that embraces traditional energy sources such as oil and coal, along with natural gas, nuclear power and renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydropower. Obama has spent billions to promote "green energy" and backs a tax credit for the wind industry that his Republican rival Mitt Romney opposes. While production of renewable energy has soared, critics point to several high-profile failures, including Solyndra, a California solar company that went bankrupt, costing taxpayers more than $500 million.

Romney pledges to make the U.S. independent of energy sources outside of North America by 2020, through more aggressive exploitation of domestic oil, gas, coal and other resources and quick approval of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Texas. Obama blocked the pipeline because of environmental concerns but supports approval of a segment of it.

___

Why it matters:

Every president since Richard Nixon has promised energy independence ? a goal that remains elusive. In 2011, the U.S. relied on net imports for about 45 percent of the petroleum it used, much from Canada, Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Still, U.S. dependence on imported oil has declined in recent years, in part because of the economic downturn, improved efficiency and changes in consumer behavior. At the same time, domestic production of all types of energy has increased, spurred by improved drilling techniques and discoveries of vast oil supplies in North Dakota and natural gas in states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and West Virginia. Production also is booming in traditional energy states such as Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.

The natural gas boom has led to increased production, jobs and profits ? and a drop in natural gas prices for consumers. Natural gas, a cleaner alternative to coal, has generally been embraced by politicians from both parties.

Still, there are concerns. Critics worry that popular drilling techniques, such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, which allow drillers to reach previously inaccessible wells, could harm air, water and health. Hydraulic fracturing, also called fracking, involves blasting mixtures of water, sand and chemicals deep underground to stimulate the release of gas. Environmental groups and some public health advocates say the chemicals have polluted drinking water supplies, but the industry says there is no proof.

Similarly, the Keystone XL pipeline could help make the nation more energy secure ? or pollute the environment in the event of a spill. Developer TransCanada says the 1,700-mile pipeline from western Canada to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast would pipe more than 1 million barrels of oil per day, more than 5 percent of the nation's current oil consumption.

Opponents say the pipeline would bring "dirty oil" that would be hard to clean up after a spill.

Wind and solar power have grown, thanks in part to support from Obama, but their success is tenuous. Besides Solyndra, several solar companies have declared bankruptcy in part because of Chinese competition. Wind companies are laying off workers while Congress dithers on a tax credit crucial to the industry.

The changes aren't likely to have an immediate effect on the cost of the energy source Americans are most familiar with: gasoline. Gas prices are dependent on crude oil prices, which are set on the global market.

Website marketing Company Circumstance or maybe Business ...

This post will clarify a lot of the features of internet marketing by using search engine webpage (SERP) then give numerous enterprise circumstance a example of utilizing SERP as well as probable opportunities.

Considering that the mid-1990s organizations have desired strategies to how you can increase product sales through benefit of the countless tasks of on line (world wide web) marketing.Take your pick, it is often tried using; electronic mail, advertising ad, pop-up, pop-unders and search serps promoting (pay per click) provides populated the knowledge road. Many get proved profitable and a few have been proven foolhardy, regardless of result, they have many also been continuously tested out and are still being used.

Organizations, similar to Rain forest.com, have grown to be online marketing tales. Other folks, including Netflix.net are extremely prosperous they are moving its offline competition on the fence. On the other hand, the largest achievement history by far has become Yahoo and google; particularly it has the movie star corporation of the profession, The search engines. Yahoo instructions a wonderful 76% world-wide business of the two . 5 billion daily on the internet lookups. They have got develop into hence dominant that their identity is actually symbolic of the net alone, each day everyone hears what ?Google it? plus is aware of just what it indicates.

As a small business man or women, you ought to take hold of the particular effective steamrolling opportunity that Search engine serp?s website presents and rehearse their success for a very competitive advantage.

Before I actually focus on the pros and give instances of internet marketing as a result of SERP, I would like to in short , discuss the alternatives.

Your enterprise possesses a few more advertising medium?s (produce, transmit and mailings) that you just at the moment use or perhaps purchased during the past. These people have got a few things in accordance, higher cost, lower Return on investment (owing to price tag) plus the most critical factor, getting the target audience focus is difficult.

Your own sales message need to be repeatedly listened to before getting purchaser understanding. Researchers have tested your classifieds advertising takes a day-to-day nine 1 week circuit just before a client understands your product or service. Radio and television marketing require a cheaper range of duplication though the pricing is a lot higher.

This ?six-hundred lb . gorilla inside room? that of the earlier mentioned have in common could be that the buyer Have to be ready (and also near) with a acquire selection for your advertising so that you can confirm successful.

Of which final level is an essential place as if a person?s potential client will not keep in mind your reputation whether it is TIME to buy, a person?s promotion money are squandered.

The features of internet website marketing, so i ought to once again discuss We are speaking about search motor marketing (never pay each simply click) is that it is provided for free, global, 24/7/365, and your consumer is there to Obtain.

A latest Pew Web statement found out that the main utilisation of the Web is actually e mail (60%) having google in next at 49%. Anybody use google (remember Three hundred billion every day looks), an amazing 52% tend to be searching, plus by now primed to generate a pay for.

EVERY business enterprise and also company can be helped by having the internet websites indexed in Search engine results positioning, on the other hand, you need to proceed even even more as well as target a page 1 itemizing since 99% associated with searchers will not seek past the initial Thirty success, with an unbelievable 97% certainly not heading go 1st some success.

If you think your energy will be sufficient, get one of these couple minor experiments:

A person. Search for your company or perhaps organization using your distinct organization label. Just what exactly web site think you?re upon?

Two. Hunt for your small business as well as group Without making use of your distinct company identity. Precisely what web page will you be upon?

If you?re not the 1st page, top ten, you?ve still got function ahead of people, when you are simply just near, and definately will get forgotten.

Now, we should go over web marketing by way of examining a handful of small business conditions.

We. Enterprise: Charitable organization (Non-profits)

Scenario : Many a good cause web pages goal will be to give facts to teach it has the targeted traffic and also raise attention for any lead to. Non-profit contributions and volunteerism possesses lessened within the last few three years caused by economic depression.

Option ? Due to the fact benevolent organizations are common battling for the very same dollars, it is crucial for ones corporation to get ?front plus center? for the duration of just about any search. Although most of the people can have a common non-profit, you don?t want to risk that will first time donor deciding on competition. Whether or not things, products and services or maybe income contributions, web marketing make a difference straightforwardness of contribution as well as considerably transform your donation absorption.

II. Organization: Authorized

Instance * Sooner or later, people need legal services, however we can?t all phone our own ?Cousin Vinny. In . Legitimate corporations largely use conventional channels, person to person advert and a massive reliance upon nearby cellphone training books. The per month promoting budget is typically extremely high owing to efforts to boost their geographic vary.

Possibility ( blank ) online is nearly often in all of our disposal as well as accessible via dwelling, classes, perform or perhaps cellular devices, as opposed to these ?Yellow Pages? which can be missing in the home. Boost your ?findability? along with raise your sales.

 III. Real estate agent

Case ( blank ) Take into consideration of which backyard to stay real estate that you simply quickly commute go. A person remember the firm identify and placement of residence although no other. A person?s at-home ?Yellow Pages? are pointless because property has not been nearer your home. The next phase is undoubtedly an Search. Regrettably, in which property is multi-listed plus they uncover your competition 1st. Yet another income option missing.

Opportunity * It is much like Legalised model, by utilizing internet marketing you can increase your topographical assortment, though ruling where you live. Online marketing will let you make the most of niche marketing devoid of generation expense raises connected with different marketing types.

Case * E-commerce scenario is simple because you whilst your levels of competition may well represent the identical as well as similar product lines. A potential purchaser may have currently searched (through World wide web) their particular product or service of great interest, and is able to acquire. Here is the best offer you?ll possibly help make; is really as to perform is usually reply the email or even incoming mail. Even so, your internet site is on-page 7, if your buyer seeks an fx broker (understand that 97%). You need to be on-page certainly one of SERP to participate.

Opportunity ( space ) This opportunity emphasizes increasing your items specific niche market by means of internet website marketing. In a very competitive location, concentrating on small search engine terms will probably reap large encourage.

 V. Hr (Staff members) Getting Agencies

Case ( blank ) Majorities with prospecting corporations have got developed their particular enterprise determined by human relationships and for that reason their own web-site?s content articles are simply educational. This may show to be any had missed option since companies are generally bit by bit economically recovering and therefore are in search of likely spouses to provide priceless time. Actually, the economic conditions of history couple of years have in addition sealed lots of the signing up businesses challengers and also growing providers would like to replenish his or her supplier listing or looking for brand new suppliers on extra aggressive charges. The overall economy have made a rise in career actions many people looking for work hunt for alternatives to the mega-job panels such as Huge as well as CareerBuilder.

Opportunity ? Make use of your web-site to be a marketing strategy for expertise exchange in conjunction with growing on your entire internet promotion.Raise main focus in the area of interest, not only in your online site?s articles but you?ll need website exercises.

 VI. Multi-Level Advertising (MLM)

You need to constantly sponsor all the while you will be making provides in order to do well. Unfortunately, you happen to be also being competitive in opposition to a person?s ?up? plus ?down? brand for a similar natural talent. Think beyond the container, particularly all these fiscal moments where everyone is interested in several resources for income.

Opportunity ( space ) ?Kill a couple of chickens by using a single rock.? Using your ordinary solution promoting activities, getting web marketing can prove incredibly productive. Assure that your website can be simply found by focusing on search engine marketing techniques.

In conclusion, don?t let simple chances evade anyone; you?ve currently worked well tough to create your organization along with web page. Increase your marketing and advertising concentrate the spot with online marketing. Simply, reallocate the established marketing budget plus endeavours. Online (seek) promotion cost is the smallest from a mediums and also which can have the top Motorola roi; this presents the ideal ?win-win? scenario.

Tale of the Tape

Darrell Issa holding forth at his Oct. 10 hearing on the Benghazi attack Darrell Issa holding forth at his Oct. 10 hearing on the Benghazi attack

Tonight, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will debate foreign policy. They?ll argue about last month?s fatal assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. They?ll pretend to have figured out the world. And most of us, committed to one guy or the other, will play along.

We?re kidding ourselves. The Benghazi attack should humble us. Not just because our ambassador and three aides were killed, but because all of us?even those who thought they were uncovering the truth behind a lie?were wrong about what happened.

In the days after the assault, spokesmen for the Obama administration linked it to an anti-Muslim video that had triggered riots elsewhere. Republicans accused the administration of drawing this conclusion because it suited Obama?s worldview. It reduced the attack to a matter of diplomacy and, in Romney?s words, ?apologizing.? Liberals had rushed to believe what they wanted to believe.

As early accounts of a protest at the consulate collapsed, Republicans substituted their own story. The video, they explained, was irrelevant. Instead, the attack had been plotted by allies of al-Qaida to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11. This story, too, suited the worldview of its advocates. It reduced the Benghazi incident to a matter of security, warfare, and refusing to apologize. And, like the protest story, it has unraveled.

The intelligence from Libya was confused all along. The attack took place in the midst of uprisings against the video across the Muslim world, aimed particularly at U.S. embassies. The rage, though real, was ignited and stoked by anti-American extremists. That?s how it often is with mob violence: One man?s motivation is another man?s pretext. In Benghazi, witnesses saw attackers and onlookers. The problem was figuring out the relationship between them. The CIA?s initial assessments suggested a hybrid scenario: a demonstration ?spontaneously inspired by the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo" that "evolved into a direct assault" by extremists.

If you look back at the administration?s early statements, you?ll see signs of this uncertainty. Spokesmen talked about the video in the context of the Muslim riots generally. On Sept. 14, ABC?s Jake Tapper asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney whether this was true in Benghazi. ?We certainly don't know,? said Carney. In her now-infamous tour of the Sunday talk shows on Sept. 16, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice parroted CIA assessments, asserting that a protest at the consulate ?seems to have been hijacked? by ?extremists who came with heavier weapons.? On Sept. 18, Carney repeated that the video had ?caused the unrest in Cairo? and ?precipitated some of the unrest in Benghazi.? But he added, ?What other factors were involved is a matter of investigation." On Sept. 20, Obama said protests over the video ?were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests."

On Sept. 26, Libya?s president, Mohammed Magarief, told NBC News that the video ?has nothing to do with this attack.? But he offered no evidence other than the sophistication of the weapons and tactics. A week later, a former intelligence chief for the Libyan rebels echoed Magarief?s assertion, but again added no evidence.

The Obama administration?s story began to shift during a State Department conference call on Oct. 9, when a reporter asked what had ?led officials to believe for the first several days that this was prompted by protests against the video.? A department official replied, ?That was not our conclusion.? This was a renunciation of the protest story, not the video?s relevance. But nobody noticed. The right-wing mediasphere erupted with cries of vindication that the video had ?nothing to do? with the attack. The next day, Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, opened a hearing on the controversy by falsely claiming the State Department had denied that ?this assault was part of a reaction to a video or the like.? Issa offered his own single-cause theory: ?In fact, it was September 11th. ? It was that anniversary that caused an organization aligned with al-Qaida to attack and kill our personnel.?

Issa?s theory became Republican gospel. On Oct. 14, Sen. Lindsey Graham, a leading Republican voice on foreign policy, said, ?the video had nothing to do with? the attack. On Oct. 18, Charles Krauthammer wrote: ?The video? A complete irrelevance. It was a coordinated, sophisticated terror attack, encouraged, if anything, by Osama bin Laden?s successor, giving orders from Pakistan to avenge the death of a Libyan jihadist.? Yesterday on Fox News, Bill Kristol said ?no one is quarreling? with the ?fact? that ?the video had nothing to do with it.?

Indeed, that?s what the Washington press corps was reporting. On Oct. 10, Tapper, citing the State Department conference call, said the video ?apparently had absolutely nothing to do with the attack.? On Oct. 13, the New York Daily News reported that the department had said the ?attack had nothing to do with the film.? On Oct. 14, a New York Post column said, ?even the White House now admits? the video ?had nothing to do with? the attack. Bob Woodward declared on Fox News that ?We now know [the video] had virtually nothing to do with what happened in Benghazi.? Glenn Kessler, the Washington Post?s fact-checking referee, said the attack ?appears unrelated to initial reports of anger at a video.? And a day after moderating the second Obama-Romney debate, CNN?s Candy Crowley said the administration had conceded that the attack ?didn?t have anything to do with the tape.?

Brees fires 4 TD passes, Saints rally past Bucs

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Once Drew Brees got the New Orleans offense on track, it hardly mattered that Jonathan Vilma wasn't the solution for the Saints' leaky defense.

Vilma played for the first time while appealing a season-long suspension for his role in the Saints' bounty program and Brees shrugged off an early interception to throw for 377 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-28 come-from-behind victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

While it's debatable how much Vilma's return affected the defense, the unit turned back two threats near the end zone in the second half, including the drive of the game to preserve New Orleans' second straight win.

Brees extended his NFL record for consecutive games with at least one TD pass to 49, while leading long scoring drives on four straight possessions to turn a 14-point deficit into a 28-21 halftime lead.

The Saints (2-4) barely had the ball in the third quarter, but took advantage of Tampa Bay's inability to get into the end zone when Brees put together a 12-play, 95-yard march that Pierre Thomas finished with a 5-yard TD run that made it 35-21 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game.

Brees threw TD passes of 17 yards to Marques Colston, 9 yards to Darren Sproles, 48 yards to Joseph Morgan and 20 yards to David Thomas to overcome the New Orleans defense yielding 513 yards. He has thrown for three or more touchdowns in five of six games this season.

Josh Freeman threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns for the Bucs (2-4), who scored on their first three possessions of the game to build a 21-7 lead. Dallas Clark's 3-yard scoring reception trimmed Tampa Bay's deficit to 35-28 with four minutes left, and Freeman completed two passes to Vincent Jackson to help the Bucs get into position to possibly force overtime.

Jackson had seven receptions for 216 yards, but failed to score on a 95-yard play in which safety Malcolm Jenkins ran him down to make the tackle at the Tampa Bay 1. LeGarrette Blount was stopped for no gain on three straight runs, then Freeman lost 4 yards on a quarterback keeper on fourth down.

Brees launched the Saints' final scoring drive from there. He also led TD drives of 80, 80, 79 and 72 on consecutive possessions in the opening half.

Vilma practiced on his surgically repaired left knee for the first time last Wednesday and was moved from the physically unable to perform list to the 53-man roster Saturday.

The ninth-year pro's return could wind up being relatively brief. The hearing on the appeal of his season-long suspension is scheduled for Oct. 30.

Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has been appointed as arbitrator for Vilma's appeal, as well as the hearings for three other players facing suspensions of various lengths.

Vilma didn't start Sunday, but he did get on the field mostly in passing situations throughout the game.

He pressured Freeman on an incompletion that was nearly intercepted by Roman Harper, and got his hands on another pass that he tipped first with his right hand and then his left before it fell incomplete.

Down a touchdown and out of timeouts, Freeman marched the Bucs from his own 19 to the New Orleans 9 in the final two minutes. He threw incomplete for Jackson, who came down with the ball out of the end zone on third down. On the game's final play, Freeman rolled to his left to find Mike Williams open in the corner of the end zone.

But the receiver had been pushed out of the back of the end zone before coming back into the field of play. So, what appeared to be a possible tying catch was nullified for illegal touching.

Freeman threw TD passes of 13 yards to Tiquan Underwood and 17 yards to Jackson in the first half. Doug Martin scored on a 36-yard run for Tampa Bay.
